Session Overview
The party reunites with an old friend—Corvin Hootsprint, an owlin ranger and goblin-deterrent columnist—before setting sail aboard the Annabelle Lee toward Skyhorn Lighthouse. After a three-hour voyage filled with shipboard antics and reconnaissance, the crew is ambushed by a massive water elemental that nearly drowns multiple party members. Through coordinated attacks and desperate rescues, they defeat the creature and claim a mysterious pouch of magical beads from its remains. Now docked at the lighthouse island, they find no trace of the missing Jade Lion—but evidence suggests something sinister awaits within the barricaded lighthouse.
Fionn’s Journal Entry
[Written hastily on damp paper, rosemary sprig pressed between pages]
The ocean tried to swallow us. I do not recommend it.
[Rough sketch of serpentine water form, annotated: “Elemental - resists normal weapons”]
Corvin found us at the docks—the owl-person who writes about keeping goblins from homes. He brought rosemary, knowing my fondness for herbs. Small kindnesses. We welcomed him aboard, though nobody mentioned we made peace with goblins rather than killed them. His disappointment will come later.
Three hours sailing. Weather-sight showed overcast skies, clearing tomorrow. Lumina detected nothing unnatural among the crew. Corvin interrogated sailors about goblin remedies. Most suggested swords. He was unimpressed.
The island appeared—steep rock, lighthouse above, no ship at dock. Corvin flew ahead, sensed fey, dragons, elementals within a mile. Saw no wreckage. The Jade Lion simply… vanished.
Then the water rose.
[Shakier script follows]
A serpent of living water. It engulfed Tiffany first. I pulled her free—strength I did not know I had. Corvin was caught later. I pulled him free too.
Then it caught me.
The crushing silence inside was… familiar. Like the quiet I sought after she left. The grove elders sent me on this research journey shortly after, wise in their timing. Perhaps they understood something I did not—that sometimes we must be swallowed by something vast and uncaring before we remember we can still fight our way out.
I freed myself. Rolled clear. Went invisible and ran.
[Margin note: “Two natural 20s pulling others free. One pulling myself. The dice favored survival today.“]
Tiffany’s colorful magic—like impossible dawn flowers—scattered the creature across the deck. In its remains: six black spheres. Beads of Force. Given to Corvin, who lacks magical attacks.
The lighthouse waits. Gate broken. Door barricaded from outside. Crew repairs the ship.
We go alone.
[Final note: “The rosemary survived.“]
Crew Assessment
-
Lumina: Recovered from her initial stumble—literally, as the wave knocked her prone—to become our anchor. Her blessing magic strengthened us all. Also attempted to relieve herself over the ship’s rail and fell into the harbor. I pretended not to notice.
-
Tiffany: Twice nearly drowned, twice returned to devastate the creature with her patron’s power. Her magic manifests in colors I have only seen in certain forest flowers at dawn. She cleaned Lumina after the harbor incident without being asked. Kindness beneath the pristine exterior.
-
Corvin: New to our company but not to our friendship. His scouting proved invaluable—we know the ship did not wreck, which means it went somewhere else. His constant questions about goblin deterrents grow endearing. I shall tell him about the soap theory the sailors mentioned.
